Free Idaho Boat Bill of Sale

An Idaho boat bill of sale records who sold a vessel, who bought it, what it is, and what was paid. The Department of Parks and Recreation handles boat registration rather than a motor vehicle office.

Idaho’s own bill of sale form asks for the hull or vehicle identification number, the year, make, model, and length, the true selling price, the date of sale, and full legal names and addresses for both parties. Lienholder details go on it too where a lender is involved.

Note the phrase true selling price. Stating a false price, name, or address on that form is a felony under Idaho law, which makes writing the real number the only sensible choice.

A newly acquired vessel is registered in person in Idaho, at a county assessor’s office, a participating boat registration vendor, or a motor vehicle office. There is no way to complete a first registration by post.

Bring the boat’s title or your bill of sale, photo identification, and hull identification number verification meeting federal standards.

A certificate of number expires on December 31 each year regardless of when it was issued, so a boat bought in autumn still needs renewing at the turn of the year.

Tip: Ask the seller whether the boat is titled before you agree a price. Idaho titles newer vessels with permanently attached propulsion and larger outboard-powered boats, and knowing which category yours falls into tells you which documents to collect.

Every vessel built after 1972 carries a 12-character hull identification number, and Idaho requires two identical HINs displayed on a vessel.

Check both against your paperwork before money changes hands. A mismatch is far easier to resolve while the seller is still standing in front of you.

A boat you built yourself has no manufacturer-assigned number, so Parks and Recreation can assign one. State-issued numbers for homemade boats carry Idaho’s registration prefix followed by the letter Z.

Where a hull number is missing or deficient, expect an inspection by a law enforcement official before the registration goes through.

Two things catch new Idaho boat owners out, and neither appears on the bill of sale.

An Invasive Species Fund sticker is required to operate a vessel on Idaho waterways, and the requirement reaches non-motorized craft as well as motorboats. Quagga mussels and similar hitchhikers travel on hulls, which is why the state takes it seriously.

The trailer is separate. Trailer registration goes through a motor vehicle office rather than Parks and Recreation, so a boat-and-trailer purchase means two errands.

Deadlines, fees, and sticker prices change, so confirm current figures with your county assessor before you go. Start your Idaho boat bill of sale now and arrive with the true price already written down.
