Georgia bills of sale are commonly used for:

  • Personal property and equipment

While not every type of sale legally requires a bill of sale, having one helps protect both parties and creates a paper trail if ownership is questioned later.

When Do You Need a Bill of Sale in Georgia?

You may need a bill of sale in Georgia when:

  • Registering a vehicle may require a bill of sale as proof of ownership, especially in private sales, though a signed title is usually the main document accepted.
  • Registering a boat requires proof of ownership, which can be shown with a bill of sale or a dealer’s invoice.
  • Transferring ownership of a motorcycle in Georgia requires proof of ownership, and a bill of sale is one of the key documents you can use to meet this requirement.
  • Recording the transfer of other valuable personal items for legal or tax purposes

Georgia law requires registration of vehicles and most boats within 30 days of purchase or moving into the state. Individuals who purchase a vehicle from another individual must register the vehicle within 7 business days of purchase.

Does a Georgia Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized?

Not usually. Most Georgia bills of sale do not need notarization. However:

  • Vehicles and motorcycles: A signed bill of sale is sufficient, but notarization can add extra assurance.
  • Boats: A bill of sale is required, but notarization is optional.
  • Firearms: Notarization isn’t required, but it can provide proof of a lawful transfer.
  • Trailers: A bill of sale is recommended but not required.

Even when not required, notarizing or having two witnesses can help avoid disputes.

Georgia-Specific Rules and Requirements

Vehicles

  • Required documents typically include: proof of ownership (such as a Bill of Sale [Form T-7], title, or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin), a completed MV-1 Title/Tag Application, proof of insurance, valid Georgia ID, emissions certificate if applicable, and payment for taxes and fees.
  • Odometer disclosure (Form GA-25) is required for vehicles under 16,000 pounds in most cases.

Boats

  • Register all motorized boats and sailboats over 12 ft.
  • Registrations last 3 years, expiring in the owner’s birth month.
  • Owners must report sales or transfers within 15 days.
  • Fees: under 16 ft. $35; 16–26 ft. $70; 26–40 ft. $140; over 40 ft. $210.

Trailers

  • Must have a serial plate (apply with Form T-23, $5 fee).
  • Law enforcement must verify the plate with Form T-22C before registration.
  • Pay $12 + Ad Valorem Tax to get a license plate and registration.
  • Georgia does not issue titles for homemade trailers.

Firearms

  • No license needed to own or carry in Georgia.
  • Weapons Carry License (WCL) only required for reciprocity with other states.
  • Must be 21+ (18+ military), Georgia resident, with clean record.
  • Apply at county probate court; license valid 5 years.
