An Alaska trailer bill of sale is the written record of a private trailer sale between two people. Alaska titles trailers, so the document sits alongside the title rather than replacing it.

Thirty days. The Division of Motor Vehicles states that an Alaska resident who buys a vehicle must transfer it into their name within 30 days of the date of sale by obtaining an Alaska title.

That clock starts on the sale date, which is one reason to date the bill of sale carefully. Trailers are on the list of vehicles the division titles, together with passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, vans, motorhomes, manufactured homes, and motorcycles.

Camper shells are the exception worth knowing. The division neither titles nor registers them. Similarly, ATVs and snowmachines do not require titles at all in Alaska.

Alaska prescribes no particular bill of sale form, but several state forms surround the transfer. Knowing which one applies saves a second trip.

The application itself

Titling and registration run on the Vehicle Transaction Application, the form most people know as form 812. It covers the transfer of ownership and the registration in one submission.

When there is no title

If neither a title nor a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin is available, a vehicle inspector completes Verification of Vehicle, form 811. These inspections are free at a state DMV office.

Homebuilt trailers

A trailer built rather than bought follows the division’s reconstructed and homebuilt vehicle procedure instead of the standard route.

If you live far from an office

Alaska runs a remote title procedure for residents without a DMV office within 50 miles, so the paperwork can be mailed to headquarters in Anchorage rather than delivered in person.

Buying outside Alaska

If you buy the trailer while outside the state, the division asks you to follow the new vehicle title procedure and mail the documents to DMV headquarters in Anchorage. Because fees vary, the division will email an electronic invoice rather than have you guess at the amount, so you do not have to send money with the paperwork.

The order below matches how the division processes a private sale.

1. Complete and sign the bill of sale, recording the sale date and price.
2. Have the seller sign the trailer’s title over to the buyer.
3. Complete the Vehicle Transaction Application for the new owner.
4. If no title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin exists, arrange a free Verification of Vehicle inspection at a state DMV office.
5. Submit everything within 30 days of the sale, in person or by mail if you qualify for the remote procedure.

A trailer coming in from another state follows the same new vehicle title procedure, so budget for the verification step even when the seller hands over clean out-of-state paperwork.

Fees change from time to time, so confirm the current amount with the Division of Motor Vehicles before you file.

Record the trailer’s year, make, and VIN or serial number, the price, the sale date, and both parties’ full names and addresses. Note the as-is condition if that is the agreement.

Copy the VIN from the trailer plate rather than from the seller’s paperwork. If an inspector later completes a Verification of Vehicle, the number on your document is what gets checked against the trailer itself.

Each party should keep a signed original.
