An Arizona trailer bill of sale documents a private trailer sale, naming both parties and describing the trailer. Arizona is unusual in that its own bill of sale form can stand in for a signed title in some transfers.

Sometimes it replaces the title. To transfer a title and registration, the Motor Vehicle Division asks for a completed Title and Registration Application, form 96-0236, together with either a signed vehicle title or a Title Transfer Bill of Sale, form 38-1306, which applies to Arizona vehicles only.

That second option is the part most people miss. Arizona publishes a bill of sale that the division accepts in place of the endorsed title, which is not how most states handle a private sale.

The division also publishes a general Bill of Sale, form 48-2004, used in other situations.

A trailer transfer follows the vehicle rules, with a few trailer-specific wrinkles on the registration side.

The 15-day deadline

Arizona law requires the buyer to apply for a title within 15 days of purchase. Titling and registration usually happen in the same visit.

Declared gross weight

The Title and Registration Application carries a certification for a trailer or semitrailer with a declared gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less that is not maintained or operated in furtherance of a commercial enterprise. Knowing your trailer’s declared weight before you go keeps that section straightforward.

Permanent or regular registration

A trailer may qualify for a regular registration of one, two, or five years, or for permanent registration. Permanent registration is a one-time fee with a PERM tab issued and no annual vehicle licence tax billing, though a special plate is still billed each year.

Where to file

Transfers go through the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division, an authorised third party office, or the AZ MVD Now service where the transaction is eligible. Not every transfer qualifies for the electronic route, so check eligibility before assuming you can avoid the counter.

Titles are electronic by default

Once a transfer is completed, the Arizona title record becomes electronic and your title information sits in your AZ MVD Now account. A paper title is available if you want one, but it is no longer the default.

The sequence below matches how a private sale moves through the division.

1. Complete the bill of sale and record the sale date, since the 15-day clock runs from purchase.
2. Have the seller endorse the title, or complete Title Transfer Bill of Sale form 38-1306 if the trailer is an Arizona vehicle.
3. Complete and sign Title and Registration Application form 96-0236.
4. Note the declared gross weight and the intended use, commercial or not.
5. File within 15 days at an MVD office, a third party office, or on AZ MVD Now.

Fees are set by the state and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with the Motor Vehicle Division before you file.

List the trailer’s year, make, and VIN, the declared gross weight, the price, the sale date, and both parties’ full names and addresses. Add an as-is statement where that reflects the agreement.

Recording the declared gross weight is the Arizona-specific habit worth forming. It drives which registration category the trailer lands in, and it is the one figure buyers rarely have to hand.

Both parties sign, and both keep a copy.
