What Is an Arkansas Trailer Bill of Sale?
An Arkansas trailer bill of sale is the written record of a private trailer sale. The state lists a bill of sale among the documents needed to register a vehicle, so it does real work here rather than sitting in a drawer.
How Long Do You Have to Register a Trailer in Arkansas?
Sixty days from purchase. The Department of Finance and Administration states that you have 60 days from the date of purchase to register your vehicle, which makes the sale date on your bill of sale worth getting right.
Registration and titling run through the Office of Motor Vehicle, and the counter transactions happen at State Revenue Offices around the state.
Arkansas Requirements for a Trailer Transfer
Arkansas asks for a specific bundle of documents, and two of them catch buyers out because they come from the county rather than the state.
What to bring
The department lists the title or Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, a bill of sale, a lien contract where the purchase was financed, an odometer statement, proof of assessment, and proof of property taxes.
Assessment and property tax
Those last two come from your county. Assessment runs between 1 January and 31 May, and the revenue office wants proof that property taxes due have been paid.
Sales tax
The state sales and use tax rate is 6.5% of the taxable price of motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers, and 7% for Texarkana residents. Local taxes may also apply depending on where you live.
The sales tax credit
If you sold a vehicle or trailer rather than trading it in, credit may be available where the sale falls within 60 days before or after the purchase of the replacement. A bill of sale for the item sold must be presented, which is the clearest reason to keep yours.
Temporary tags
Where a dealer does not issue a temporary tag, the department allows you to visit any State Revenue Office with your bill of sale and driver’s licence to be issued one. That has to happen within the first 10 days after purchase, so it is a much tighter window than the 60-day registration deadline.
Tip
Keep the bill of sale for the trailer you sell, not only the one you buy. Arkansas allows a sales tax credit when a sale and a replacement purchase fall within 60 days of each other, and the department asks to see a signed bill of sale for the item sold before it applies the credit.
How to Register a Trailer in Arkansas
Work through the county steps before the state ones, since the revenue office will ask for both.
- Complete the bill of sale, recording the price, the sale date, and the trailer’s VIN or serial number.
- Collect the title or Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin from the seller.
- Assess the trailer with your county assessor and settle any property taxes due.
- Take the whole bundle to a State Revenue Office within 60 days of purchase.
- Pay the sales tax, registration, and title fees due, and keep your copy of the bill of sale.
Rates and fees are set by the state and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with the Department of Finance and Administration before you go.
What to Include in the Document
Record the trailer’s year, make, and VIN or serial number, the sale price, the sale date, and both parties’ full names and addresses. The department publishes its own bill of sale form if you would rather start from that.
State the price clearly and separately. Arkansas assesses sales tax on the taxable price at registration, so a vague or bundled figure invites questions at the revenue office counter.
Both parties should sign and keep a copy.
