A Georgia trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. Georgia publishes its own version as form T-7, and the state sets out precisely when that document carries the transfer and when it does not.

Yes, when no title is required. Form T-7 states that a bill of sale is not accepted to transfer ownership of a vehicle when a Georgia title is required, and that it is accepted where a title is not required.

So the first question is whether your trailer needs one. A Georgia certificate of title is required for a 1986 or newer model year motor vehicle, motorcycle, camper, travel trailer, or car or tow dolly weighing 2,001 pounds or more.

Plenty of ordinary utility trailers sit outside that description, which is why the bill of sale does real work in Georgia rather than sitting in a drawer.

Georgia attaches some unusually strict handling rules to its own form, and one tax quirk worth knowing.

No corrections allowed

Form T-7 carries a warning across the top that any correction or alteration will void the form. Crossing out a digit and initialling it, which passes elsewhere, does not pass here.

Trailers escape the title tax

The form notes plainly that trailers are not subject to Title Ad Valorem Tax. That is the tax most Georgia buyers expect on a vehicle purchase, so its absence is a genuine saving.

Where the paperwork goes

Submit the form, the supporting documents, and any applicable tax to the county tag office in the county where the primary purchaser lives, not to a state office.

Odometer disclosure

Federal rules require the seller to disclose the reading and the buyer to acknowledge it, unless the item is exempt. Anything 20 model years old or older is exempt, and the word exempt can be written in the space provided.

Showing sales tax was paid

Where Georgia sales tax has already been paid, the bill of sale can carry the proof. Recording the amount of Georgia sales tax paid, or the seller’s valid Georgia sales tax number, on the document itself is what the state accepts.

Court-ordered sales

A court order must accompany the form where a court has ordered the sale, and the case number goes in the seller section.

Work out the title question first, because it decides everything after it.

1. Establish whether your trailer falls inside the categories that require a Georgia title.
2. If it does not, complete the bill of sale in full, with both parties’ legal names and addresses.
3. If it does, have the seller assign the certificate of title instead.
4. Record the sale date, purchase price, and the trailer’s year, make, model, and identification number.
5. Take everything to the county tag office where the buyer resides and pay any tax due.

Fees and tax treatment change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with the Department of Revenue or your county tag office before you go.

Cover the trailer’s year, make, model, and identification number, the sale date, the purchase price, and full legal names and street addresses for both sides.

Use the names exactly as they appear on identification. The tag office matches them, and a shortened first name is enough to hold up a counter transaction.

Both sides should sign, and the buyer should carry the original to the tag office rather than a scan.
