Free Illinois Trailer Bill of Sale Template

An Illinois trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. Illinois routes vehicle paperwork through the Secretary of State rather than a motor vehicle department, and the office publishes no standard bill of sale form.

Not as a rule, but it is accepted. The Secretary of State lists a bill of sale among the supporting documents the Electronic Registration and Title system will take alongside an application, so it has a defined place in the process.

What the state does require is the tax return. A private purchase runs on Tax Form RUT-50, and a dealer purchase on RUT-25. One of those must be presented with a separate tax payment made out to the Illinois Department of Revenue at the time you apply for title and registration.

Since the tax form carries the price, your bill of sale is what backs up the figure you put on it.

Illinois sorts trailers into plate classes by weight, and that classification is the first thing to settle.

The application

Titling and registration run on the Application for Vehicle Transaction(s), form VSD 190. The Electronic Registration and Title system lets you complete and print it, or you can pick one up at a Secretary of State facility.

Which plate your trailer takes

The state issues UT plates for trailers of 2,000 pounds or less and TA plates for trailers of 3,000 pounds or less. Anything from 3,001 pounds upward falls into the flat weight trailer classes, and separate categories exist for recreational and farm trailers.

One plate, not two

Only one plate is issued to each trailer. TA trailer plates carry either all numerals or numerals followed by a two-letter suffix.

Renewals differ by class

Flat weight trailer plates for 3,001 pounds and over renew by mail or at a facility, while the TB through TD classifications can be renewed online.

What counts as a trailer

Illinois law defines a trailer as a vehicle without motive power, other than a pole trailer, designed to carry persons or property and to be drawn by a motor vehicle, built so that no part of its weight rests on the towing vehicle.

Work through the tax form early, because it needs its own payment.

1. Complete the bill of sale with the price, date, and full trailer description.
2. Have the seller assign the title, checking the buyer’s name in the assignment area matches the application.
3. Complete form VSD 190 through the Electronic Registration and Title system.
4. Fill in Tax Form RUT-50 for a private purchase, or RUT-25 from a dealer.
5. Submit everything with a separate tax payment payable to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Fees are set by the state and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with the Secretary of State before you file.

Record the year, make, and identification number, the weight, the price, the date, and both parties’ names and addresses.

Because Illinois offers no template, the burden of completeness sits with you. Anything missing here cannot be recovered from a state form later.

Sign two originals so neither side is relying on the other’s copy.
