Free Louisiana Trailer Bill of Sale Template

A Louisiana trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. Louisiana calls a trailer a movable, and the state publishes a form titled Bill of Sale of a Movable written in notarial-act format.

One of your documents does. The Office of Motor Vehicles requires an original notarized bill of sale or invoice specifying the actual consideration involved and a full description of the vehicle.

The useful nuance is that you do not need all three notarized. The OMV states it is only necessary to notarize the bill of sale, the invoice, or the title, so a title assigned before a notary can carry the whole transfer.

Two exceptions tighten that up. If a trade vehicle is listed on the bill of sale, that document must be notarized, and an Act of Donation must always be notarized.

The paperwork bundle is specific, and one item can substitute for another if you know the rule.

When you can skip the separate document

A separate bill of sale is not required where the selling price is included on a title with a notarized assignment. Getting the price onto the title at the notary saves a document.

The application

Titling and registration run on the vehicle application form, DPSMV 1799, which goes to OMV Headquarters, an OMV office, or a Public Tag Agent location.

An alternative to a notary

An authorized agent of a federally insured financial institution may witness the assignment instead of a notary, provided the seller is present, a lien is being recorded at the time ownership transfers, and the institution supplies a designation of authorised officers on letterhead.

Odometer statements

Where a vehicle is not exempt from odometer requirements and the back of the title has no odometer disclosure block, a supplemental odometer statement has to be submitted.

Telling the state you sold it

The seller files a Notice of Vehicle Transfer, form DPSMV 1697, which can also be completed through the OMV website.

Buying new from a dealer

A new trailer arrives with a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin assigned from the dealer to the buyer, plus an original itemised invoice showing the full description of the trailer, any trade-in, and the dealer’s current permit number.

When an invoice needs a notary

Where a tax credit is shown on an invoice, that invoice must be notarized. The exception is an invoice from a state with no notarial requirement, which does not need it.

If there is finance

An original or copy of a properly completed UCC-1 financing statement, or another security agreement, goes in with the file where a lien is to be recorded.

Book the notary first, because everything else waits on it.

1. Agree the price and prepare the bill of sale with a full description of the trailer.
2. Meet at a notary and have the seller assign the title, or notarize the bill of sale instead.
3. Complete vehicle application form DPSMV 1799.
4. Add a supplemental odometer statement where the title carries no odometer block.
5. Submit everything to OMV Headquarters, an OMV office, or a Public Tag Agent.

Fees are set by the state and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with the Office of Motor Vehicles before you file.

State the actual consideration involved and give a full description of the trailer, including year, make, body type, and identification number, with the date and both parties’ details.

Leave the signature block blank until you are in front of the notary. A pre-signed document defeats the point of the notarial act.

Each party should keep an original.
