A Maine trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. Maine is unusual in routing most registrations through town offices rather than a state counter, so the document normally goes to your municipality.

Only above two thresholds together. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles asks for the title signed over to the new owner where the trailer is a model year 1995 or newer and over 3,000 pounds net weight.

Both conditions have to be met. An older trailer, or a lighter one, still registers but never carries a Maine title, which leaves your bill of sale as the ownership record.

Where you go matters as much as what you bring.

Your town office first

Registration normally happens at the local municipal office. Where a municipality does not take part in the bureau’s registration programme, you go to a BMV branch office instead with the same documents.

Check before you drive there

Not every town participates, so the bureau advises contacting your local municipal office to find out before making the trip.

One year or two

Maine registers trailers for one or two years. The two-year option is simply the annual fee doubled.

Vanity plates

Boat and utility trailers can carry vanity plates for an additional annual fee of $25.00, doubled for a two-year registration. Long term trailers are not eligible.

Excise tax comes first

Excise tax in Maine is a municipal tax paid at the town office, and it is collected before the registration is issued.

Bringing one in from another state

No sales tax falls due where you can show proof of out-of-state registration, though a Maine Use Tax form is still needed to prove the exemption. The prior out-of-state title comes in too where the trailer is a 1995 or newer model year.

Semitrailers follow the same test

The bureau applies the same signed bill of sale requirement and the same 1995 and 3,000 pound title test to semitrailers, which it registers through a separate page but on identical terms.

The order below matches how the bureau describes it.

1. Get a signed bill of sale from the seller covering the trailer and the price.
2. Collect the title signed over to you where the trailer is 1995 or newer and over 3,000 pounds net weight.
3. Confirm whether your municipality participates in the registration programme.
4. Pay excise tax at the town office.
5. Pay the registration fee, doubling it if you want two years.

Trailers coming in from another state follow the same route, with the out-of-state registration standing in for a sales tax payment and the Maine Use Tax form recording the exemption.

Fees change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles or your town office before you go.

Record the year, make, and identification number, the net weight, the purchase price, the date, and both parties’ names and addresses.

Net weight earns its place on this document. It is one half of the test that decides whether a title exists, and an unloaded weight is easy to establish now and awkward to reconstruct later.
