Free Minnesota Trailer Bill of Sale Template

A Minnesota trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. Minnesota titles cars, trucks, motorcycles, buses, vans and large trailers, which leaves a great many smaller trailers outside the titling system entirely.

Not at 4,000 pounds or below. Driver and Vehicle Services states that Minnesota does not title trailers having a gross weight of 4,000 pounds or less, unless there is a lien or a title was previously issued.

In those cases the Minnesota registration card is acceptable proof of ownership. That is the state’s own wording, and it explains why so many small trailers change hands without a title in sight.

Where a title does exist, the transfer must take place on the certificate of title within ten days of the date of sale, except in special situations.

Small trailers get their own treatment, right down to where the sticker goes.

The lifetime plate on the tongue

For a trailer of 3,000 pounds or less gross vehicle weight with lifetime registration, state law requires the numbered plate or sticker to be adhered to the side of the trailer frame tongue near the hitch.

Heavier trailers plate on the rear

A trailer registered at greater than 3,000 pounds displays one plate mounted on the rear of the vehicle.

Odometer disclosure does not apply

The disclosure requirement excepts vehicles that are not self-propelled, so a trailer sits outside it regardless of model year.

Ownership transfers happen at any of the nearly 200 deputy registrar offices across the state rather than at a single central counter.

The application

Titling and registration run on the application to title or register a vehicle, form PS2000. Where a title exists, all sellers handprint their name and sign in the assignment area, and the seller lists the sales price in the sales tax declaration area on the back.

A fee you avoid

The public safety vehicle fee is not due on transfers of non-titled trailers, one of several small savings on the lighter end.

The non-title transfer fee

Transferring something without a title carries its own modest fee, separate from the filing fee and technology surcharge that accompany title transactions.

Who sets the numbers

Fees are set and distributed by the Minnesota Legislature rather than by the department, which is why they move on a legislative timetable rather than an administrative one.

Work out first whether a title exists, since it changes which document carries the sale.

1. Ask a deputy registrar to check the title status if you are unsure.
2. For a non-titled trailer, complete the bill of sale with year, make, identification number, date, and both printed names and signatures.
3. For a titled trailer, have the seller sign the assignment and enter the sales price on the back.
4. Complete form PS2000.
5. Take everything to any deputy registrar office within 20 days of the sale.

Fees are set by the legislature and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with Driver and Vehicle Services before you go.

Give the year, make, and identification number, the date of sale, and the printed names and signatures of both the buyer and the seller.

Write it once and write it cleanly, because an alteration or erasure can void a sales document outright and send you back for a fresh one signed by both parties.

Both sides keep a copy.
