A Mississippi trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. Registration runs through county tax collectors, and for most trailers this document is what establishes that you own the thing at all.

Only above 5,000 pounds. The Department of Revenue states that, as of 1999, trailers over 5,000 pounds gross vehicle weight and manufactured homes must be titled.

Below that weight no title is issued, but registration still applies. The department’s guidance on boat trailers makes the position explicit: they are treated as private trailers and require proof of ownership when registering, such as a bill of sale, a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, or a title.

Your bill of sale therefore sits in the same list as a title, which is about as strong a role as this document takes anywhere.

The department is blunt about one thing in particular, and it is worth taking seriously.

Never leave the buyer’s name blank

The department warns against accepting or delivering a title that is incomplete or improperly assigned, and states that leaving the buyer’s name blank to complete later is a violation of Mississippi law.

Plates come off

The previous owner removes the licence plate once the title is assigned and the trailer is handed over to the new owner. The plate does not travel with the trailer.

Where it all happens

Registration and address changes go through the county tax collector’s office rather than a central agency counter.

How long a title takes

Standard titles are typically issued within about six weeks once a complete application reaches the department, and a fast track option costs $39.00.

No emissions test

Mississippi does not require emissions testing as a condition of registration, so that is one hurdle absent from the process.

Older trailers

Anything 25 years old or older counts as an antique vehicle and becomes eligible for antique registration, which is worth asking about on a long-serving utility trailer.

If the tag goes missing

The tax collector issues a substitute tag and decal for $10.00, or $2.50 where only the decal is needed.

Wrong county, wrong plate

Using a plate from the wrong county, or an out-of-state plate, is reported to your county tax collector’s office as a violation.

Almost everything happens at one county counter.

1. Complete the bill of sale with the sale price, date, identification number, and full description.
2. Collect the assigned title where the trailer is over 5,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
3. For a lighter trailer, bring the bill of sale or certificate of origin as your proof of ownership.
4. Visit the county tax collector’s office where you live or where the trailer is kept.
5. Pay the taxes and fees assessed and collect your tag.

Rates and fees are set at state and county level and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with your county tax collector before you go.

Cover the year, make, and identification number, the gross vehicle weight, the sale price, the date, and both parties’ names, addresses, and signatures.

State the weight clearly. It decides whether a title is involved, and on a trailer without one your description is the only record of what was sold.

Both parties sign, and each keeps a copy.
