What Is a New Hampshire Trailer Bill of Sale?
A New Hampshire trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. Registration here is a two-part process, and this document is what starts it at your town or city clerk.
Does a New Hampshire Trailer Need a Title?
Not the lighter ones. Municipal agents across the state apply a 3,000 pound line, and the division’s own homemade trailer form is headed for trailers over 3,000 pounds gross weight, which points the same way.
Where a trailer is title-exempt, the division is explicit about what replaces the title. You present a proper bill of sale under RSA 261:148, together with proof of the identification number.
That proof can be an original or copy of a title, a previous New Hampshire registration or copy, or a properly completed identification verification form.
New Hampshire Requirements for a Trailer Transfer
Two counters are involved, and they have to be visited in the right order.
Your town goes first
Every motor vehicle begins its registration at the town or city clerk where the owner resides. The division cannot process the registration until the town fees have been paid.
The clerk may finish it too
Your town or city clerk may be a Municipal Agent of the state, able to complete the state part of the process for an additional fee, which saves a second journey.
Who can prepare a title application
An application for a certificate of title is a controlled document. It may only be obtained at your town or city clerk’s office and prepared by an authorised agent such as a clerk or a licensed dealer.
Selling something with no title
To sell a vehicle that does not require a title, the division asks for a bill of sale on its Report of Sale or Transfer of a Non-Titled Motor Vehicle form, alongside either an identification verification or a copy of the previous registration or title.
Homemade trailers
A trailer built rather than bought must first be examined by a State Police officer, who may issue a state assigned identification number. All bills of sale and other documents on major component parts have to accompany any later title application.
How long the title takes
Once the application reaches the division, a title takes roughly 30 to 50 calendar days to arrive.
Tip
Keep the receipts from a build. Where a homemade trailer is later titled, New Hampshire wants every bill of sale and related document covering the major component parts submitted with the application, and those are impossible to recreate years later.
How to Register a Trailer in New Hampshire
The order below is the one the division sets out.
- Take a proper bill of sale from the seller, meeting the requirements of RSA 261:148.
- Collect proof of the identification number, whether a title, a previous registration, or a verification form.
- Establish residency at your town or city clerk and pay the town portion.
- Complete the state portion at the clerk if they are a Municipal Agent, or at a division office.
- Hand over the seller’s title where the trailer is above the exemption.
Fees are split between town and state and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with your clerk before you go.
What to Include in the Document
Give the date of the sale, plus the name, signature, and legal address of both the purchaser and the seller. A post office box is not accepted in place of an address.
Describe the trailer fully as well, with the year, make, model, colour, identification number, body type, and gross vehicle weight rating.
Both parties should keep a copy.
