Free Oregon Trailer Bill of Sale Template

An Oregon trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. The state publishes its own version as form 735-501, and Oregon gives this document a role in trailer titling that no other state matches.

Because the rules say so directly. Oregon’s administrative rules on evidence of ownership state that DMV will not issue title for a manufactured trailer without a bill of sale for the axle or trailer frame.

The same rules treat a reconstructed or assembled vehicle the same way, requiring a bill of sale to the frame or unibody rather than to the finished thing.

That makes the axle or frame paperwork the pivot of an Oregon trailer file, which is worth knowing before you buy a trailer with no documents at all.

Two clocks start the moment the seller releases the trailer.

The seller has ten days

Notification of the sale must reach DMV within 10 days under section 803.112 of the Oregon Revised Statutes.

The buyer has thirty

Apply for title within 30 days of the date of purchase or you may be charged a late title transfer fee.

Every previous owner counts

The application file wants original releases or bills of sale from any previous owners, plus lien releases from any previous security interest holders. One document from the last seller may not be enough on a trailer that has changed hands repeatedly.

Ink rules on the state form

Use only blue or black ink. Do not white out or strike through any name, and the seller’s signature must be an original rather than a photocopy.

Bringing one in from elsewhere

An out-of-state or out-of-country title triggers an identification number inspection, which DMV can carry out at an office.

What DMV accepts as ownership

Beyond a title or bill of sale from the owner of record, the rules list a certificate of origin, a signed certification of ownership facts, and transfers by operation of law such as an inheritance affidavit.

The odometer window

An odometer disclosure between you and the last owner applies to anything model year 2011 and newer, running until the unit reaches 20 years old.

Replacing a missing title

Where the trailer arrives with no title at all, you can apply for a replacement and transfer it at the same time, submitting the title application, the replacement application signed by both parties, the bill of sale, and any lien release together.

DMV keeps discretion

Nothing in the ownership rules limits the division’s discretion to request or consider other information, so an unusual file may attract further questions.

Gather the whole ownership chain before you apply.

1. Complete the bill of sale in blue or black ink, with original signatures.
2. Collect original releases or bills of sale from every previous owner.
3. Obtain a bill of sale covering the axle or trailer frame on a manufactured trailer.
4. Complete the application for title and registration.
5. Apply within 30 days, and make sure the seller notifies DMV within 10.

Fees are set by the state and change from time to time, so confirm current amounts with DMV before you file.

Give the plate number, year, make, description, identification number, and title number, plus the buyer’s and seller’s printed names and addresses, and the date of purchase and release.

Name the axle or frame where you can. That is the specific thing the rules attach to on a manufactured trailer, and a generic description may not satisfy the file.

Both parties keep a copy.
