Free Vermont Trailer Bill of Sale Template

A Vermont trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. The state publishes its own version as form VT-005, which doubles as an odometer disclosure statement.

Not the light ones. The state does not issue titles for trailers with an empty weight of 1,500 pounds or less, alongside a short list of other exempt vehicle types.

Where no title exists, the department is explicit about what replaces it. Your Vermont registration certificate is the ownership document for that trailer.

So when you sell, you give the buyer the registration certificate and a signed bill of sale. The new owner then obtains a title when they complete their own registration.

The document quietly saves the seller a signature.

It replaces the seller’s signature

On the registration and title application, the seller’s signature is only required if no other bill of sale exists. Produce one and that section resolves itself.

Selling to an out-of-state buyer

Vermont recommends obtaining a title anyway where the buyer plans to register elsewhere, since most other states require a valid title before they will register anything.

Tax on the greater figure

Purchase and use tax falls due at registration or titling at 6 percent of the purchase price or the clean trade-in book value, whichever is greater.

Odometer disclosure from 2011

A separate odometer disclosure statement is required where the unit is model year 2011 or newer.

No post office boxes

A physical address is required on the application if your mailing address is a post office box or a private mailbox.

Inspection within fifteen days

Anything not displaying a valid Vermont inspection sticker has to be inspected within 15 days of registration.

Driving inside that window

Where the trailer is used during those 15 days without a sticker, it still has to be in good mechanical condition and meet the state’s safety inspection standards.

Someone else filing for you

An application signed by an authorised agent rather than the owner must include a completed departmental power of attorney form.

More than two owners

Where three or more people will appear on the record, a separate multiple owners form goes in with the application.

If the title is lost

A misplaced Vermont title can be replaced online, at a local office, or by posting in the replacement title application.

One application covers registration, tax and title together.

1. Take the registration certificate or assigned title from the seller.
2. Complete the bill of sale and odometer disclosure statement.
3. Complete the registration, tax and title application.
4. Add a separate odometer disclosure if the trailer is model year 2011 or newer.
5. Submit by post or in person, with the tax and fees due.

Fees and the tax rate are set by the state and change from time to time, so confirm current figures before you file.

Give both parties’ full legal names and contact details, the year, make, model, body type and colour, the identification number, the price, the date and the signatures.

Record the empty weight as well. Vermont draws its titling line at 1,500 pounds empty, and that single figure decides whether a title ever exists for the trailer.

Note the odometer reading on the same document, since the state’s own version folds the disclosure into the bill of sale rather than issuing two forms.

Both parties keep a copy.
