What Is a Wyoming Trailer Bill of Sale?
A Wyoming trailer bill of sale records a private trailer sale. The state’s title application covers motor vehicles, trailers, snowmobiles, watercraft and mobile homes on a single form.
Two County Offices, Not One
Wyoming splits the job. Titles and lien filings are processed through the county clerk’s office in the county seat of your county of residence.
Plates and registrations come from a different counter. Those are obtained through the local county treasurer, in the same county seat.
Statute lets either office ask for more. The department or county clerk may require other information, which may include a vehicle bill of sale or similar document, or an affidavit for proof of ownership.
Wyoming Requirements for a Trailer Transfer
The rules on identification numbers are where Wyoming gets specific.
Numbers are die punched
A state assigned number must be die punched onto the trailer. Only then does a law enforcement officer inspect it to verify the number is present.
The officer signs it off
That officer signs the certificate of assignment, stating either that no number was found or listing every number found on the trailer.
Pick-up box trailers are exempt
A trailer made from a pick-up box needs no identification number inspection at all.
Inspections must happen here
The inspection has to be completed by Wyoming law enforcement, and a state assigned number can only be issued to a Wyoming resident.
Where no bill of sale exists
Build a trailer without one and you supply a signed, dated statement explaining where, when and from whom the major components were obtained.
False statements are a felony
Anyone convicted of making a false statement in that application is guilty of a felony.
All new components need receipts
A trailer built from entirely new parts calls for proof that all the materials are new, such as receipts naming where and from whom they came.
Brands follow the national record
Wyoming will brand a trailer based on information found in the national titling database even where the current title appears to carry no brands at all.
Out-of-state titles get inspected
Unless the trailer came from a Wyoming dealership, an out-of-state title arrives with a completed identification inspection form.
Weight slips at the treasurer
County treasurers require a weight slip to register a trailer, so have the trailer weighed before you queue for plates.
Tip
Keep the receipts for every major component if you are building a trailer. Wyoming will accept a signed statement instead, but a felony warning sits on that application, and paperwork you already have is far safer than a recollection written down years later.
How to Title a Trailer in Wyoming
Plan for two offices in the same county seat.
- Take a notarized bill of sale and the assigned title from the seller.
- Arrange an identification number inspection where the title comes from another state.
- Complete the application for certificate of title and identification inspection.
- File the title work at your county clerk’s office.
- Take the title to your county treasurer for plates and registration.
Fees and sales tax vary by county and change from time to time, so confirm current figures with your county offices.
What to Include in the Document
Give the year, make and model, the identification number, the purchase price, the date of sale, and both parties’ names, addresses and signatures.
Have it notarized. County clerks across Wyoming ask for a notarized bill of sale on a private party purchase, and the signature block is easier to arrange while both of you are together.
Name the major components separately where the trailer was built rather than bought, since that is the level of detail the state assigned number application works at.
Both parties keep a copy.
