What Is a Colorado Vehicle Bill of Sale?
A Colorado vehicle bill of sale is a signed record of a car sale between a seller and a buyer. It captures the parties, the vehicle, the price agreed, and the date the sale closed.
The document stands behind the title work and gives both sides proof of the terms. In Colorado, the assigned title moves ownership, and the bill of sale records the price and the deal.
Colorado Requirements for a Vehicle Bill of Sale
Cars in Colorado are titled through the Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles, with paperwork handled at your county motor vehicle office. The seller assigns the title, and the buyer applies to title and register the car.
Titling and Registration
A bill of sale is treated as best practice, and it is needed when the purchase price is not shown on the title itself. The assigned title is what carries ownership from seller to buyer.
Official State Form
Colorado offers an official Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale, form DR 2173, available through authorized vendors. A complete bill of sale you prepare works too, as long as it records the vehicle, the price, and both signatures.
Tip: If the title does not show the price, plan to bring a bill of sale to your county office. Confirm the current documents with the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles before you go.
Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Sell a Car in Colorado?
Sometimes, yes. Colorado calls a bill of sale best practice and specifically expects one when the purchase price is not listed on the title. The assigned title remains what transfers ownership.
The document names the buyer, the seller, the car, and the price, so nothing is left uncertain. For an unusual sale, ask the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles which paperwork applies.
