What Is a Missouri Vehicle Bill of Sale?

A Missouri Vehicle Bill of Sale is a written record of a car sale between a private buyer and seller. It lists the two parties, the vehicle, the price they agreed on, and the date the sale happened.

The document supports the title paperwork and gives both sides proof of the amount paid. In Missouri, the assigned certificate of title transfers ownership, and the bill of sale can also serve as the notice of sale the state expects.

Missouri Requirements for a Vehicle Bill of Sale

Cars in Missouri are titled and registered through the Missouri Department of Revenue. The seller assigns the title to the buyer, who applies to title it in their own name at a license office.

Official State Form

Missouri publishes an official bill of sale, Form 1957, that buyers and sellers can use to record the transaction. The same form doubles as a way to report the sale to the Department of Revenue.

Notarization

Notarization is not required for the title assignment or the bill of sale in a standard private sale. A notarized lien release comes into play only when an outstanding loan is listed on the title.

Tip: Missouri asks sellers to report a sale to the Department of Revenue within a set window, using Form 1957 or the notice of sale form. That deadline is set by the state and can change, so confirm the current rule with the Missouri Department of Revenue.

Does a Vehicle Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in Missouri?

No, notarization is not required for a standard private sale. Missouri moves ownership through the assigned title, and neither the title assignment nor Form 1957 needs a notary for a typical transaction.

A notarized document is only expected in specific cases, such as releasing a lien listed on the title. If your sale involves anything out of the ordinary, confirm the current steps with the Missouri Department of Revenue.
