Free Montana Vehicle Bill of Sale Template

A Montana Vehicle Bill of Sale is a written record of a car sold between a private buyer and seller. It captures the parties, the vehicle, the agreed price, and the date the sale closed.

It supports the title transfer and gives each side proof of the purchase. In Montana, ownership is transferred on the title itself, and the bill of sale backs up that record.

Vehicles in Montana are titled through the Montana Motor Vehicle Division, part of the Department of Justice, with titling handled at the county treasurer’s office. The seller signs the title over and the buyer applies to title it in their own name.

Official State Form

Montana provides an official bill of sale, the MV24, that sellers can use to document a transaction and authorize an electronic record transfer. All owners listed on the title need to sign it for the transfer to go through.

Titling and Registration

Ownership moves through the title, where the buyer’s name and address are written and all owners sign. The buyer then takes the assigned title to the county treasurer’s office to complete the transfer.

Tip: Montana asks buyers to title a vehicle within a set number of days of the sale, and a late transfer can carry a fee. That window is set by the state and can shift, so confirm the current rule with the Montana Motor Vehicle Division.

It is not always mandatory, but Montana makes it easy by offering the MV24 bill of sale for the purpose. Ownership transfers on the title, and the bill of sale records the price and terms alongside it.

That record names the buyer, the seller, the car, and the price, so a question about the sale later is simple to settle. For an unusual transfer, check first with the Montana Motor Vehicle Division.

Lay the details out clearly so the bill of sale matches the title you hand to the county treasurer.
