What Is a Nevada Vehicle Bill of Sale?

A Nevada Vehicle Bill of Sale is a written record of a car sold between a private buyer and seller. It lists the parties, the vehicle, the agreed price, and the date the sale took place.

The document supports the title paperwork and gives both sides proof of what was paid. In Nevada, the assigned title is what transfers ownership, and the bill of sale records the money side of the deal.

Nevada Requirements for a Vehicle Bill of Sale

Vehicles in Nevada are titled and registered through the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. The seller signs the title over to the buyer, who brings it to a DMV office to register the car and title it in their own name.

Official State Form

Nevada offers an official bill of sale, the VP-104, for buyers and sellers to record a sale. It is a handy way to document the price and terms, though it is not by itself proof of ownership.

Titling and Registration

Ownership passes through the signed title, not the bill of sale. The Nevada DMV is clear that a bill of sale on its own is not acceptable proof of ownership, so the seller must sign the title over exactly as their name appears, and the buyer prints their name to match their license.

Tip: Keep the VP-104 with the signed title rather than in place of it, since the title is what moves ownership. If your situation is unusual, confirm the current steps with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Sell a Car in Nevada?

A bill of sale is useful, but it does not replace the title. Nevada transfers ownership through the properly signed title, and the DMV states that a bill of sale by itself is not acceptable proof of ownership for registration.

Used the right way, the VP-104 records the buyer, the seller, the vehicle, and the price alongside the title. For an unusual transfer, check first with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.
