Free New Jersey Vehicle Bill of Sale Template

A New Jersey Vehicle Bill of Sale is a written record of a car sold between a private buyer and seller. It captures the two parties, the vehicle, the price agreed, and the date the sale took place.

The document travels with the title paperwork and gives each side proof of what was paid. In New Jersey, the signed-over title transfers ownership, and the seller provides a bill of sale along with it.

Vehicles in New Jersey are titled through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, and a private transfer is completed in person at an MVC agency. The seller signs the title over to the buyer, who then titles and registers the car.

When a Bill of Sale Is Needed

For a private sale, the Motor Vehicle Commission directs the seller to provide the buyer with a bill of sale along with the signed title. It should carry the buyer’s name and address, the sale date, the odometer reading, and the sale price.

Titling and Registration

Ownership moves through the title, where the seller signs the seller’s section on the reverse and the buyer signs their section. The buyer then brings the assigned title to an MVC agency to complete the transfer and pick up plates.

Tip: Hand over the bill of sale with the signed title so their details match. If someone signs on another party’s behalf, the MVC calls for a notarized power of attorney, so confirm the current steps with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

Yes — for a private sale the Motor Vehicle Commission tells the seller to provide the buyer with a bill of sale along with the signed title. Ownership still transfers through the title, but the bill of sale is part of the paperwork the MVC expects.

It records the buyer, the seller, the vehicle, and the price, so both parties keep a clear account of the deal. For an unusual transfer, check the current requirements with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

Set the details down clearly so the bill of sale matches the signed title you bring to the MVC.
