What Is a North Dakota Vehicle Bill of Sale?

A North Dakota vehicle bill of sale is a written record of a car or truck sold from one party to another. It lists the buyer and seller, describes the vehicle, and sets out the price and the date of sale.

North Dakota publishes its own versions, including a Private Party Vehicle Bill of Sale, which document the purchase price for the state’s title process.

North Dakota Requirements for a Vehicle Bill of Sale

Vehicles in North Dakota are titled and registered by the North Dakota Department of Transportation, through its Motor Vehicle Division. The seller assigns the title to the buyer, who then applies to title the vehicle in their own name.

Official State Form

North Dakota offers official forms for this, including the Private Party Vehicle Bill of Sale (SFN 62502) and the Seller’s Certificate and Vehicle Bill of Sale (SFN 2888). The Motor Vehicle Division uses the stated purchase price when it processes the title.

Notarization

A North Dakota bill of sale is completed with the parties’ signatures; notarization is not part of the standard private-sale form.

Tip: Note the odometer reading and sale price on the form before signing, since the Motor Vehicle Division looks for both. For any unusual case, confirm the current steps with the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Sell a Car in North Dakota?

North Dakota provides a bill-of-sale form and uses it as part of the title paperwork. The assigned title moves ownership, and the bill of sale records the purchase price the state relies on.

Keep your copy in case the sale is ever questioned. For a transfer that falls outside the usual pattern, check first with the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

What to Include in a North Dakota Vehicle Bill of Sale

Put the details down clearly so the bill of sale matches the Motor Vehicle Division paperwork.

  • Buyer and seller names and contact details.
  • Vehicle year, make, model, VIN, and odometer reading.
  • Sale price and the date of sale.
  • Signatures of both parties, each keeping a copy.
