What Is a Rhode Island Vehicle Bill of Sale?

A Rhode Island vehicle bill of sale is a written record of a car or truck sold from one party to another. It names the buyer and seller, describes the vehicle, and states the agreed price and the date of sale.

The document supports the state’s title and registration paperwork and leaves each side clear proof of what was paid.

Rhode Island Requirements for a Vehicle Bill of Sale

Vehicles in Rhode Island are titled and registered by the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. The seller assigns the title to the buyer, who then applies to title and register the vehicle in their own name.

Official State Form

The Rhode Island DMV publishes a Bill of Sale, and it accepts one as supporting proof of a sale alongside the assigned title and title application. Your own detailed bill of sale keeps a clean record of the price and terms.

A Supporting Record

For a used vehicle brought in from another state, the DMV expects the title to be properly assigned from the seller to the buyer. The bill of sale backs that up by documenting the transaction.

Tip: Note the odometer reading and sale price on the paperwork at handover. For the current forms and any unusual case, check with the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Sell a Car in Rhode Island?

It is a wise record to keep, and the Rhode Island DMV provides a form for it. The assigned title moves ownership, while the bill of sale documents the price and the terms both sides agreed to.

Should a question about the sale surface later, the signed record is there to answer it. For anything out of the ordinary, confirm what applies with the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles.
