What Is a South Carolina Vehicle Bill of Sale?

A South Carolina vehicle bill of sale is a written record of a car or truck sold between a buyer and a seller. It lists both parties, describes the vehicle, and sets out the agreed price and the date of sale.

South Carolina publishes its own version, the SCDMV Bill of Sale (Form 4031), which the state accepts as supporting proof of the transaction.

South Carolina Requirements for a Vehicle Bill of Sale

Vehicles in South Carolina are titled and registered by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. The seller assigns the title to the buyer, who then applies to title and register the vehicle in their own name using the Title and Registration Application (Form 400).

Official State Form

South Carolina offers an official Bill of Sale, Form 4031, and the SCDMV accepts it alongside the assigned title. Your own detailed bill of sale documents the price and terms just as well.

Notarization

The SCDMV Bill of Sale form is completed with the buyer’s and seller’s signatures and carries no notary block, so notarization is not part of a routine private sale.

Tip: Record the odometer reading and sale price on the paperwork before signing. For the current forms and any unusual situation, check with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.

Do You Need a Bill of Sale to Sell a Car in South Carolina?

It is a smart record to keep, and South Carolina gives you a form for it. Ownership moves through the assigned title and Form 400, while the bill of sale documents the price and terms the two of you settled.

If a question about the sale comes up later, the signed record answers it. For a transfer that falls outside the usual pattern, confirm the steps with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.

What to Include in a South Carolina Vehicle Bill of Sale

Set the details down clearly so the bill of sale lines up with the SCDMV title paperwork.

  • Buyer and seller names and contact details.
  • Vehicle year, make, model, VIN, and odometer reading.
  • Sale price and the date of sale.
  • Signatures of both parties, each keeping a copy.
