Free Tennessee Vehicle Bill of Sale Template

A Tennessee vehicle bill of sale is a plain written record of a car or truck sold between two private parties. It notes the buyer and seller, the vehicle details, the price they settled on, and the date money changed hands.

The paper backs up the title work and hands each party proof of what was paid. Ownership in Tennessee passes through the reassigned title, and the bill of sale stands behind it.

Cars in Tennessee are titled and registered through the Tennessee Department of Revenue, with the counter work done at your local county clerk’s office. The seller reassigns the certificate of title to the buyer, who applies to have it issued in their name.

Titling and Registration

The buyer brings the reassigned title and an odometer disclosure, along with proof of identity and residency, to the county clerk. Some family or low-price transfers also call for an Affidavit of Non-Dealer Transfers.

Official State Form

Tennessee does not require a separate state bill-of-sale form for an everyday private sale, and the bill of sale is not the instrument that transfers the title. It remains a useful record of the price and the terms for buyer and seller alike.

Tip: Keep both the reassigned title and your bill of sale together until the new title arrives. If a transfer looks unusual, confirm the current paperwork with the Tennessee Department of Revenue or your county clerk.

It is not a firm requirement, yet holding one is a good move. Tennessee moves ownership through the reassigned title, and a bill of sale documents the money side of the deal.

That record lists the buyer, the seller, the vehicle, and the price, so a later dispute is easy to answer. For a transaction that falls outside the norm, ask the Tennessee Department of Revenue first.

Set the details down clearly so the bill of sale lines up with the county clerk’s title paperwork.

• Buyer and seller names and contact details.
