A graduate school letter of intent is a written statement telling a programme that you intend to enrol, or that it remains your first choice while a decision is pending. It names the programme, your position in the process, and what you are committing to.
The term covers two rather different documents. One accompanies or follows an application and sets out why the programme fits you. The other is sent after an interview or from a waitlist, telling a specific programme it is your top choice and that you will attend if admitted.
The second kind carries real weight and real obligation. Committees read it as a commitment, and sending it changes how they treat your file, so it should never be sent lightly or to more than one programme.

If you want to stay in touch with other programmes, send a letter of continued interest instead. That reaffirms your enthusiasm without claiming they are your first choice, and it is entirely appropriate to send to several.
Only commit if you mean it. If a programme admits you on the strength of a letter of intent and you then decline, you have cost a place someone else could have taken.

Ask about funding directly rather than hinting. Whether an assistantship, fellowship, or waiver is available, and by when it would be confirmed, is a fair question and one admissions staff answer routinely.
Be honest about competing offers. Saying that another programme has offered funding and asking whether this one can respond is normal practice, provided the other offer is real.
Handle deferrals separately. Whether a place can be held, for how long, and on what conditions is entirely the institution’s decision, so ask rather than assume, and get any agreement in writing.
Terms attached to funding vary enormously between institutions and countries. Read what any offer actually commits you to, and ask the department or the graduate school office where anything is unclear rather than relying on what applies elsewhere.
It is worth being clear about the limits, because expectations here run high.
It will not overcome an application that falls short. Committees weigh preparation, results, references, and fit, and enthusiasm does not substitute for any of them.
It will not create a place that does not exist. Where a cohort is full or funding is fixed, the most compelling letter changes nothing about the arithmetic.
It will not speed up a decision. Committees run to their own timetable, and repeated follow-up tends to irritate rather than accelerate.
What it can do is break a tie. Where a committee is choosing between comparable candidates and one has said plainly they will attend, that certainty is worth something, because programmes care about who actually accepts.
Send it once, then wait. A single well-judged letter helps; a sequence of them does not.
