Free Letter of Recommendation for College Template

A letter of recommendation for college is a written assessment of a student, sent to admissions offices as part of an application. It describes how the writer knows the student and what they have seen the student do.

Admissions readers use it for something the rest of the application cannot give them: an account of the student from someone who watched them work. Grades show outcomes, and a letter shows how those outcomes were reached.

Teachers and counselors write most of these, though coaches, employers, and mentors are sometimes asked as well. What matters is whether the writer has genuinely seen the student closely enough to say something specific.

Choose people who can describe the student concretely, not just those with impressive titles. Strong choices tend to be:

• A teacher from a core subject, ideally in the last two years of school.
• A teacher from a class where the student struggled and then improved.
• The school counselor, who can speak to context across the whole record.
• A supervisor from a job, internship, or long-running volunteer role.
• A coach or activity leader who has seen the student under pressure.
• A research or project mentor, where the student did substantial work.
• An arts instructor, for students applying to a programme in that discipline.

Avoid family members, and avoid anyone who barely knows the student, however senior they are. A famous name attached to a vague letter is a weaker signal than a teacher who can describe one lesson in detail.

Colleges usually specify how many letters they want and from whom. Read each college’s instructions before asking anyone, since sending extra letters rarely helps and occasionally counts against a file.

A letter of recommendation for college should fit on one page. Admissions readers move quickly, so the specifics need to arrive early.

Your Details and the Date

Open with your name, title, school or organization, and how to reach you.

How You Know the Student

Say in what capacity and for how long. Name the class, team, or project, since that anchors everything that follows.

The Student’s Academic Strengths

Describe how they think and work, with an example. A specific question they asked, or a problem they would not let go of, says more than a grade.

Character and How They Treat Others

Give an instance of how they behave in a group: how they handle disagreement, help peers, or respond to setbacks.

Growth Over Time

If you have watched them change, say so. Admissions readers respond strongly to a trajectory they can see.

Context Where It Helps

Note anything that puts the record in perspective, such as a demanding course load or responsibilities outside school. Stick to what the student has shared and is comfortable disclosing.

A Clear Endorsement and Contact Line

Close with your recommendation and an offer to answer questions.

Admissions offices read thousands of these, and most blur together because they describe a type rather than a person. A letter of recommendation for college earns its place by being impossible to reuse for anyone else.

The letters that land contain a moment. One specific scene, described in two or three sentences, does more than a paragraph of adjectives. A student who reworked a failed experiment four times, or who quietly organized help for a classmate, becomes a person on the page.

Comparison helps when it is honest and bounded. Saying a student is among the strongest you have taught in a decade means something, provided it is true and you say what the comparison is based on.

Length is not strength. A focused page beats three pages of general praise, and a reader who reaches the end still remembering the student is the goal.

Avoid repeating the transcript. The reader already has the grades and the activity list, so a letter that summarizes them spends its space confirming what is known instead of adding what is not.

Tip: If you cannot write a genuinely positive letter, say so kindly and decline. A lukewarm letter reads clearly to admissions and hurts the student more than a missing one would.

A letter of recommendation for college takes about an hour done well. Document Genius walks you through each section with simple questions.

1. Ask the Student for Materials

Request their resume, the colleges and programmes they are applying to, and a note on what they hope you will mention.

2. Check the Deadlines and the Submission Method

Most applications collect letters through an online portal with its own deadline. Confirm both before you start writing.

3. Open With Your Relationship

State who you are, how you know the student, and how long you have known them.

4. Build the Letter Around Two Examples

Choose one academic and one personal, and describe each concretely. Resist the urge to cover everything.

5. Say What Kind of Classmate They Will Be

Colleges are assembling a community, so a line on how the student affects the people around them carries real weight.

6. Close, Proofread, and Submit

End with a direct endorsement, check every name and spelling, and submit through the required portal. Start yours now and have it ready before the deadline.

How you ask shapes the letter you get. Ask early, ask in person where you can, and make it easy to say yes.

• Ask at least a month before the deadline, and earlier in a busy season.
• Give your resume, your list of colleges, and the deadline in writing.
• Remind the writer of specific work you did with them.
• Say why you chose them, since it helps them find their angle.
• Confirm how the letter is submitted and send the portal invitation promptly.
• Send a thank-you note afterwards, and tell them where you were admitted.

Many applications ask whether you waive the right to read the letter later. Writers and admissions offices generally treat a waived letter as more candid, so consider that when you decide, and ask your counselor if you are unsure what it means for your application.
