Free Sorority Recommendation Letter Template

A sorority recommendation letter is a written endorsement sent to a chapter on behalf of a woman going through recruitment. Members often call it a rec, and it introduces the candidate before the chapter meets her.

Alumnae write most of them. Many organizations expect the writer to be an initiated member of that specific sorority, which is why candidates often ask family friends and neighbours to help them find someone.

These letters are usually more formalised than their fraternity equivalent. Several organizations publish their own form, set their own deadline, and route everything through a national office rather than the chapter directly.

Practice still varies. Some sororities treat recs as important, others as optional, and a few no longer use them at all, so confirm before assuming one is needed.

It also helps to know what the letter is not. It is an introduction rather than a vote, and it sits alongside everything the chapter learns during recruitment itself.

Eligibility is the first thing to check, because a letter from an ineligible writer is usually discarded.

• An initiated alumna of the specific sorority, which most organizations require.
• An alumna from any chapter of that organization, not only the campus in question.
• A current member in good standing, where the organization permits it.
• An alumnae association member writing on the association’s behalf.
• In some organizations, a member of another sorority writing a general letter of support.

If the candidate cannot find an alumna directly, an alumnae association or the organization’s website will often help match her with one. That is a normal request and not an imposition, and starting it early matters more than who makes the introduction.

Check the campus too. A few organizations ask that the writer not be closely related to the candidate, and a mother or sister writing may need to be a second letter rather than the main one.

A sorority recommendation letter rarely travels alone. Most organizations ask for a small packet, and an incomplete one can stall.

The letter itself is the core, usually on the organization’s own form rather than free prose. Alongside it, chapters commonly ask for a resume listing activities and involvement, a recent photograph, and sometimes a transcript or grade summary.

The candidate assembles most of this and sends it to you. Your job is the form and the letter, and it helps to tell her early exactly what you need from her and by when.

Tip: Download the organization’s current form before writing anything. Forms change between years, and a letter written to last year’s questions often has to be redone.

Keep it to one page, and answer the form’s questions rather than writing around them.

Your Membership Details

Give your name, your chapter, your initiation year, and contact information. Chapters verify this.

How You Know the Candidate

State the relationship and how long it has run. Depth matters more than proximity.

Scholarship and Involvement

Note academic standing briefly and describe sustained commitments rather than listing every activity.

Character in Practice

Give one specific instance that shows what she is like. This is what members remember from a packet.

Fit With the Organization

Say why you believe she suits this particular sorority and what she would contribute.

Anything the Form Specifically Asks

Some forms request grade point average, hometown, or family connections. Answer only what is asked and only what you can verify.

Your Endorsement and Contact Line

Recommend her plainly and confirm you are happy to be contacted.

A sorority recommendation letter takes about half an hour once the packet is in front of you. Document Genius walks you through each section with simple questions.

1. Confirm Eligibility and the Form

Check that you may write, and download the current form.

2. Ask the Candidate for Her Materials

Request her resume, photograph, campus, and the deadline in one message.

3. Open With Your Membership and Connection

State your chapter and year, then how you know her.

4. Give One Real Example

Describe something you actually saw rather than listing adjectives.

5. Address Fit

Explain what she would bring to the chapter.

6. Submit Through the Required Route

Send it where the organization specifies, on time. Start yours now and have it ready to send today.

Two questions come up constantly, and both deserve straight answers.

A legacy connection, where a close relative was a member, is worth mentioning if it is accurate. Policies on how much weight it carries vary considerably between organizations and have changed in recent years, so state the relationship as a fact and avoid implying any entitlement.

Timing is the other. Recruitment runs to a fixed calendar and the deadline for recs usually falls well before it begins, sometimes months earlier. A candidate who starts asking a week beforehand may find the window has closed.

Finally, be honest with candidates about what a rec does. It introduces her and adds context, but chapters make their own decisions during recruitment, and a strong letter does not guarantee an invitation. Saying so kindly in advance spares a lot of disappointment later.

Candidates without family connections often assume recs are out of reach. They usually are not.

Start with the people already around you. Teachers, coaches, neighbours, employers, and family friends frequently turn out to be members, and most people are glad to be asked.

Beyond that, local alumnae associations exist partly for this. Many organizations list association contacts publicly and will help match a candidate with a member willing to meet her and write.

Give whoever agrees plenty of notice and everything they need in one message: your resume, a photograph, your campus, the deadline, and where the packet goes.

Finally, do not panic if you cannot get a rec for every organization. Recruitment is designed to work without a complete set, and chapters meet every candidate in person regardless of what arrived beforehand.
