A letter of recommendation for a teacher supports an educator applying for a post, a promotion, an award, further study, or a licence renewal. It describes what they do in a classroom and what changes as a result.
Principals and department heads write many of them. Colleagues, mentors, university supervisors, and sometimes parents also write, and each brings a different vantage point that a reader will weigh differently.
Hiring panels in education are unusually specific about what they want evidenced. Subject knowledge matters, but so do classroom management, planning, assessment, and how a teacher works with colleagues and families.
The letter is also read alongside formal records the panel already holds. Appraisal outcomes and observation grades tell them what was judged; your letter tells them what it was like to be there, which is the part no record captures.
The most useful writer is someone who has actually watched the teacher teach. Sensible choices include:
Ask what the recipient expects before agreeing. Some school systems and licensing bodies specify who may write and in what format, and a letter from the wrong role can be set aside regardless of quality.
Where a teacher is applying outside education entirely, a letter written for a school panel will land oddly, so ask where it is going before choosing what to emphasise.
A letter of recommendation for a teacher usually runs one to two pages. Panels read closely and look for evidence rather than warmth.
Give your name, role, school, and contact information, and say how many years you have worked with them.
Say whether you formally observed lessons, reviewed planning, co-taught, or worked alongside them.
Describe what happens in their room. Pace, questioning, how they handle a lesson that is not landing, and how pupils respond.
Comment on how they sequence material and use assessment to adjust. This is what subject leads look for.
Describe change you have seen in learners, using whatever evidence you genuinely have rather than reaching for figures.
Note how they contribute beyond their own classroom and how they handle parent conversations.
Address reliability, safeguarding-mindedness, and how they respond to feedback.
Recommend them plainly and give a contact route.
Education panels are alert to inflated claims, and a letter that overstates results loses credibility for everything else in it.
Describe what you saw rather than attributing outcomes wholesale. A teacher who rebuilt a scheme of work and whose class engagement visibly changed is a real, defensible claim; asserting that they single-handedly raised a cohort’s results usually is not.
Where you do use data, use only figures you are entitled to share and that the school would recognise. Pupil-level information should not appear, and nothing identifying a child belongs in a reference of any kind.
Tip: One well-described lesson tells a panel more than a paragraph of outcomes. Describe what the teacher did, what pupils did in response, and what you concluded from it.
A letter of recommendation for a teacher takes about an hour done properly. Document Genius walks you through each section with simple questions.
Request the job description or award criteria so you can write to what is being assessed.
Look back at observation notes and appraisal records before writing.
Say who you are and exactly how you have seen them work.
Describe one lesson or sequence in detail rather than summarising a year.
Say how they work with colleagues, families, and leadership.
Submit through the required route by the deadline. Start yours now and have it ready today.
Parents are sometimes invited to support a teacher’s award nomination or recognition, and the letter works differently from a professional one.
You are not assessing pedagogy, and a panel does not expect you to. What you can offer is what no colleague can: what changed for your child, described plainly and specifically.
Keep your child’s details minimal and use their first name at most. Focus on the teacher’s actions rather than on your child’s difficulties, and do not include information about your child’s needs, health, or progress that you would not want read aloud.
Say how long the teacher taught your child, describe one thing they did, and explain the difference it made. Half a page written that way carries real weight with a panel.
The same teacher needs quite different letters depending on what they are applying for, and writing one version for everything wastes the strongest material.
For a teaching post, lead with classroom practice and behaviour management. A hiring panel is imagining this person with a class in September and wants evidence that translates directly.
For a leadership or promotion application, weight the letter toward influence beyond their own room: mentoring, leading a subject, improving a scheme of work, or steadying a team through a difficult period.
For an award or recognition, a single vivid example does more than a survey of competence. Panels are choosing between people who are all good, so the memorable specific wins.
For further study, emphasise intellectual curiosity, reading, and how they engage with evidence and research rather than day-to-day delivery.
Ask which of these applies before you start, and write to it.
