A vet school letter of recommendation supports an application to a veterinary programme. It sets out how you know the applicant and what you have seen of their work with animals, clients, and a clinical team.
Veterinary admissions place unusual weight on documented hands-on experience. Applicants are expected to have spent substantial time in practice or with animals before applying, and committees want that experience described by someone who supervised it.

What separates a useful vet letter from a forgettable one is precision about what the applicant actually did.
Be specific about the setting and species. A committee reading that someone helped at a clinic learns little; reading that they restrained cats for blood draws, assisted in small animal surgery prep, and did evening farm rounds for a year learns a great deal about both their exposure and their willingness.
Be equally precise about supervision level. Describe what they did unaided, what they did under direction, and what they observed only. Overstating scope is easy to do accidentally and damages the application if questioned at interview.
Tip: Ask the applicant for their own record of hours and duties before you write. It jogs your memory, and it stops your letter contradicting the experience log the programme already holds.

Requirements and submission systems change between cycles. Treat the applicant’s own instructions and the current guidance from whichever service is collecting the letter as the authority rather than anything you remember from a previous year.
