An Oklahoma notary acknowledgment is a certificate, signed and dated by a notary, evidencing a notarial act. Title 49 of the Oklahoma Statutes governs notaries, and 49 O.S. § 119 supplies the short form.

The Oklahoma Secretary of State commissions notaries for four-year terms and answers common questions in its notary FAQ.

What Every Acknowledgment Shows

According to the Secretary of State, an acknowledgment includes the jurisdiction where the act takes place and the title “Notary Public.” It also carries the expiration date, commission number, official stamp or seal, and the notary’s official signature.

Seal Options

In fact, Oklahoma lets a notary choose. The seal can be a metal seal that leaves an embossed impression, or a rubber stamp used with an ink pad. Either way, it contains “State of Oklahoma,” “Notary Public,” and the notary’s name.

Statewide Reach

Also, a notary may act in any county in Oklahoma, not just the one where they live.

Identification

The notary examines your ID and compares its signature with the one on your document. Proper ID includes a photo and signature, such as a driver’s license or passport. Alternatively, a credible witness the notary personally knows can identify you under oath.

Fees

The maximum fee for each notarial act is $5, and notaries don’t have to charge anything. However, a notary can’t charge anything to notarize an absentee ballot signature. Because fees can change, confirm the amount first.

Records

State law doesn’t require a journal for traditional notarizations, though the Secretary of State recommends one. By contrast, a remote online notary must keep a tamper-evident electronic journal.

Oklahoma law doesn’t forbid it. The Secretary of State confirms that a notary may notarize a relative’s signature, though never their own.

There’s a practical catch, however. The Secretary of State notes that a notary is meant to be an impartial witness. If the notarized document ever ends up in court, a judge might decide the notary wasn’t impartial.

So for a deed, loan, or other document with money at stake, you may prefer a notary outside the family. That way, no one has a reason to question the notary’s impartiality later.

A standard appointment goes like this.

1. Decide whether you’re signing for yourself or for someone else, and pick that short form.
2. Enter the state, county, date, and every signer’s name.
3. Bring a photo ID with your signature, such as a driver’s license or passport.
4. Acknowledge that the signature on the document is yours.
5. The notary signs, adds the commission number and expiration date, and applies the seal.
6. Pay the fee, which can’t exceed $5.

Under 49 O.S. § 119, the individual short form uses one sentence: “This instrument was acknowledged before me on (date) by (name(s) of person(s)).” An Oklahoma notary acknowledgment built on it includes:

• The state and county
• The acknowledgment sentence with the date and each signer’s name
• The official signature of the notary
• The seal or stamp
• The commission number and expiration date

If you sign for a company or another person, the representative form also names your type of authority. For example, that could be officer or trustee, followed by the party you acted for. Start your Oklahoma notary acknowledgment with Document Genius so the short form is ready.
