What Is a Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney in Washington DC?

A Washington DC motor vehicle power of attorney appoints an agent to secure license tags, a title certificate, registration, or duplicates for a vehicle from the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles. The District is not a state, and the DC DMV publishes its own form, DMV-VSPA-01.

Washington DC Requirements for a Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney

Form DMV-VSPA-01, revised September 29, 2008, sets out these points.

A Limited Purpose

The agent is appointed for the following purpose and no other: securing temporary or permanent tags, a title certificate, registration, or duplicates for the described vehicle.

Both Parties Sign

Both the applicant and the agent sign and date the form.

Duplicate Titles Can Go to a Dealer

An optional line lets the applicant authorize the DC DMV to send a duplicate title, with no lien, directly to the named dealership.

It Is on the DMV’s Document List

The DC DMV lists a Vehicle Power of Attorney Application among the documents for titling and registering a vehicle, alongside proof of identification for the owners.

Does a Washington DC Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney Need a Notary?

No. The DC DMV’s form states that, when properly executed, it is valid without official certification or notarization.

Proper execution still matters. The date, both names, the VIN, the make, model, and year, and both signatures should all be completed.

Tip: A Washington DC motor vehicle power of attorney on this form covers tags, title, and registration only. Keep other vehicle matters on a separate document.
