Free Lease Extension Addendum

A lease extension addendum is a written amendment that extends the length of an active lease. It changes only the lease end date unless the addendum clearly states otherwise.

Because it builds on an existing lease, the addendum must be signed by everyone who signed the original agreement. Once signed, it becomes part of the lease and is legally binding.

If you need to change multiple lease terms, such as rent, responsibilities, or rules, a lease renewal agreement may be a better option.

A lease extension addendum is useful when both parties are satisfied with the current lease but need more time. It keeps the process simple and avoids renegotiating the entire agreement.

You may want to use a lease extension addendum when you need to:

• Extend a lease for a short period while planning next steps.
• Prevent a lease from expiring during a sale or renovation.
• Give a tenant extra time before moving out.
• Continue a commercial lease while negotiating long-term terms.

A clear addendum should focus only on what is changing and confirm that everything else stays the same.

• Names of the parties: List the landlord and tenant exactly as they appear in the original lease.
• Reference to the original lease: Include the original lease date and the property address.
• New lease end date: State the revised expiration date clearly.
• Confirmation of unchanged terms: Specify that all other lease terms remain in effect.
• Signatures and dates: Both parties must sign and date the addendum.

Once signed, the addendum becomes part of the original lease. Store it with the lease agreement and share copies with everyone involved.

If the lease later ends or is terminated, the addendum ends with it. To end a lease early, use a lease termination letter instead.
