A motor vehicle power of attorney (also called a vehicle POA) is a document that lets you name an agent to handle specific vehicle-related tasks for you. In POA terms, you’re the principal, and the person you appoint is your agent (sometimes called an attorney-in-fact).

People usually use a vehicle POA when they cannot be physically present to sign DMV paperwork, transfer title, or complete registration steps. Once it’s signed correctly, your agent can show the form and their ID to the DMV or another agency to act within the powers you granted.

A motor vehicle power of attorney form helps you control who can do what with your vehicle, and when. For example, you can use it to authorize someone to:

• Register a vehicle or update registration details
• Transfer ownership or handle title paperwork
• Request a replacement certificate of title
• Sign DMV forms related to a sale, donation, or transfer
• Approve specific repairs or maintenance
• Handle certain insurance or storage steps (only if you allow it)

If your agent is selling the vehicle for you, they may also need a bill of sale to document the transfer.

Use these steps to keep your vehicle POA clear, specific, and easy for the DMV to accept.

Step 1 – Identify the Principal

Only the vehicle owner should sign as the principal. Add your full legal name and address, and include a phone number if you want the DMV to be able to confirm your authorization.

Step 2 – Name Your Agent

List your agent’s full name and address. Choose someone you trust to follow your instructions and complete paperwork accurately.

Step 3 – Describe the Vehicle

Your agent can only act for the vehicle(s) you describe. Include details such as:

• Year, make, and model
• Body style and color
• Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
• Plate number (if available)

Tip: If you need to authorize actions for multiple vehicles, it can be easier to create separate vehicle POAs so each one stays clear and specific.

Step 4 – Grant the Powers You Want Them to Have

Be direct about what the agent can do. You can grant broad vehicle powers, or you can restrict authority to one task, such as signing title documents only.

Common limits and instructions include:

• Allowing title signature, but not allowing the agent to sell the vehicle
• Requiring proof of sale before releasing funds
• Limiting repairs to a specific shop
• Blocking any odometer disclosures unless you approve them first

Step 5 – Decide Whether It Should Be Durable

Most vehicle POAs are short-term and task-specific, and the agent’s authority to act will end once the specific event is completed. However, you can choose whether it stays effective if you become incapacitated.

If you want the authority to continue during incapacity, consider a durable power of attorney. If you do not, keep it non-durable.

Step 6 – Set the Start and End Date

Choose when the document becomes effective. Many people make it effective immediately, so the agent can act as soon as needed.

Also set an end date or tie it to a specific event (like completing a title transfer). This keeps the authorization from lingering longer than you want.

Signing rules vary by state, and some DMVs only accept their own POA form for vehicle transactions. Start by checking your state’s requirements through state motor vehicle services, then sign your document accordingly.

A motor vehicle power of attorney typically ends when:

• The termination date you set arrives
• The vehicle transaction is completed
• You revoke it in writing
• You or your agent die

If you revoke it, tell your agent and anyone who relied on it (like the DMV) as soon as possible. Also, replace any older copies with your updated paperwork to prevent confusion.
